Dear Ms. lybrate-user, generally steroids are not recommended in children but can be used if needed based on the symptoms. However generally they are reserved for patient with severe or long standing disease rather than recent onset symptoms. Cough syrups are helpful to a certain extent in controlling cough. If your daughter is older than 1 year, honey 2- 5 ml as needed can help loosen mucous and help with cough perhaps just as efficiently as any cough syrup. (do not give honey if she is less than 1 year of age). Montelukast and doxofylline help to improve breathing. If you are having doubts, then get a second opinion. Dinking sips of hot water every 5-10 mins will help soothe the throat lining and can go a long way in helping her with her cough. A anti histamine tablet / syrup can help in cough of an allergic nature hope this helps best wishes.
